Adwatec’s new battery cooling solution selected for Damen dredger

Adwatec has launched a new battery cooling solution for hybrid and fully electric vessels. The solution combines Adwatec’s C-series cooling station with a brand-new modular chiller unit and provides the battery system with an even coolant flow and stable temperature.

A new dredger project

The newly launched chiller system has been selected by Gebhard Electro to cool AYK Energy’s Polaris battery system on board Damen’s new Trailing Suction Grab Hopper Dredger, based on the proven TSHD1000 platform. Adwatec will provide cooling for both the vessel’s water-cooled drive systems as well as the Energy Storage System (ESS), which are integrated by Gebhard Elektro.

“We are excited to see our new Chiller System selected for this project. Close cooperation between system integrators, battery suppliers and shipyards is key to success, and we are proud to contribute alongside Gebhard, AYK Energy and Damen,” says Rami Vina, Marine Business Line Director of Adwatec.
Adwatec has a long history with Gebhard Elektro, having worked together in numerous projects. This project, however, is something new, as it will be the first delivery of Adwatec’s new chiller system. Timo Lamminen, Sales Manager at Adwatec says: “On a project like this, it is extremely valuable to already have a good relationship with the people that you’re working with. Having delivered many projects with Gebhard, our teams already know each other and are in constant communication together.

“For Gebhard, an ESS is not a stand-alone component. Battery, cooling, drives and the complete electrical installation must work together as one integrated system. Reliable thermal management is therefore an important part of our system design, and Adwatec’s new ESS cooling solution fits well within that approach,” says Gerard Kraaij, Managing Director of Gebhard Elektro.

A modular approach to chiller design

Adwatec’s chiller system has been designed for harsh marine environments, each module being capable of 20 kW of cooling power. The VFD-controlled chiller module provides a precise temperature regulation, which is critical for the battery system. According to Chao Jin, Chief Technical Officer of AYK Energy “Reliable thermal management is non-negotiable for battery safety and log-term performance. We are happy to work with Adwatec’s advanced chiller to keep our systems operating at the optimal temperature.”

Cees den Herder, Project Manager at Damen Shipyard agrees “We have opted for Adwatec’s cooling systems for the energy storage system because this chiller unit can maintain a constant cooling temperature, which is desirable for the performance and lifespan of the batteries. This is the first cooperation between Damen and Adwatec, and we look forward to working together.”

The dredger will be built at Damen’s shipyard in Vietnam. Adwatec will deliver the chiller system in January 2027.
