SVC systems are used mostly in industrial networks but also in electrical power grids. They can have multiple functions as to stabilize network voltage, provide reactive power or mitigate flicker caused by industrial process such as Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Laddle Furnace (LF) or mining equipment to name a few. They are often required for optimal process outcome and improved productivity.
Each system consists of transformer, reactors, capacitor banks, busbars and power electronic valves typically using thyristors or equivalent components. These power electronics provide heat losses which need to be cooled.
Cooling requirements
Required cooling power can vary typically from few hundred to thousand kilowatts. Coolant flows also range from hundreds of liters per minute to couple of thousand liters per minute. Cooling systems have typically simple and robust design with good maintainability in focus.
Closed-loop liquid cooling application:
A closed-loop liquid cooling system circulates coolant through power electronic valve heat sinks, removing heat and transferring it to the technical water circulation via a water-to-water heat exchanger. Alternatively water-to-air heat exchanger may be used. Power electronic valves are located at voltage potential why low conductivity of the coolant is a must.
