STATCOM systems are used in electrical Power Grids in Utility applications but also in industrial networks. They can have multiple functions as to stabilize network voltage, provide reactive power or to participate in network overall stability in case of network faults. They are considered critical infrastructure and equipment for the reliability of the network.
Each system consists of transformer, reactors, busbars and power electronic valves typically using IGBT, IGCT or equivalent components. These power electronics provide heat losses which need to be cooled.
Cooling requirements
Required cooling power can vary typically from few hundred to few thousand kilowatts. Coolant flows also range from hundreds of liters per minute to several thousand liters per minute. Cooling systems have typically high degree of redundancy and reliability of the system is in central role. Life time expectancy is several decades for the system and therefore also maintainability is important aspect for the system and components.
Closed-loop liquid cooling application:
A closed-loop liquid cooling system circulates coolant through power electronic valve heat sinks, removing heat and transferring it to the ambient outdoor air via a water-to-air heat exchanger. Alternatively installation site may have technical water circulation in which case water-to-water heat exchanger may be used. Power electronic valves are located at voltage potential why low conductivity of the coolant is a must.
