HVDC systems are used in electrical Power Grids in high voltage direct current links preferred for long distance transfer of power. Alternatively they can be used between electrical grids with different frequencies or whenever separation of the electrical grid is required. HVDC systems are considered critical infrastructure and equipment for the reliability and stability of the network in terms of transfer of power. 

Each converter station consists of AC to DC and DC to AC converters and other applicable components required such as smoothing reactors and harmonic filters. The high voltage DC line is located between converter stations. Power electronics in converters provide heat losses which need to be cooled. 

Cooling requirements

Required cooling power can vary typically from few thousand to more than ten thousand kilowatts. Coolant flows also range from thousands of liters per minute to more than ten thousand liters per minute. Cooling systems have typically high degree of redundancy and reliability of the system is in central role. Life time expectancy is several decades for the system and therefore also maintainability is important aspect for the system and components.

Closed-loop liquid cooling application:

A closed-loop liquid cooling system circulates coolant through power electronic valve heat sinks, removing heat and transferring it to the ambient outdoor air via a water-to-air heat exchanger. Alternatively installation site may have technical water or sea water circulation in which case water-to-water heat exchanger may be used. Power electronic valves are located at voltage potential thus low conductivity of the coolant is a must.
