Deck machinery such as winches, cranes, and mooring equipment is increasingly electrified, relying on power converters and motors to handle high torque loads during cargo operations or mooring.
These systems often operate outdoors and are exposed to fluctuating temperatures, seawater spray, and mechanical stress, all of which require a robust and weather-resistant cooling solution.
Cooling requirements
Power electronics in deck machinery generate significant heat during operation and must be kept within optimal temperature ranges to avoid performance degradation. Because power electronics are often close to harsh deck conditions, their cooling system must be robust against vibration and saltwater and compact due to space restrictions. Sometimes cooling systems need to be self-contained, especially if far from central water cooling
Closed-loop liquid cooling application:
A compact closed-loop system cools power electronics and motors and can connect to the vessel’s technical water. Dry coolers are also frequently used in these applications, especially when machinery is located far from vessel’s central cooling infrastructure.
