The electric drives and power electronics controlling bow thrusters operate intermittently but at high power levels, generating significant heat in short bursts. Efficient cooling is essential to ensure responsiveness and reliability during critical maneuvers.
Cooling requirements
Although used intermittently, bow thrusters generate high peak thermal loads that must be managed to ensure system availability when needed most. Cooling systems should be compact with minimal footprint.
Closed-loop liquid cooling application:
A closed-loop liquid cooling circuit removes heat from the power electronics and motor drives transferring it to the vessel’s technical water system via a water-to-water heat exchanger. In isolated bow compartments, dry coolers may be used as an alternative where access to the main cooling loop is impractical.
